Why it matters

The emotional ground zero of the center

Parque Calderón sits at the heart of Cuenca’s historic layout. Civic buildings, cafés and two churches that sum up centuries of urban change cluster around it. At its center, the monument to Abdón Calderón honors the Cuencano hero of independence.

More than “seeing” the park, it is worth inhabiting it for a few minutes: sit under the araucaria trees, watch the flow of people and use the square as a starting point to walk the historic center on foot.
